Non mi aspettavo chissà che dal mio primo post in rete, in quanto poche persone nei dintorni ai tempi
avevano un ricevitore GPS ed usavano Usenet, la rete su cui pubblicai le coordinate. Era un salto nel buio e non sapevo che cosa aspettarmi.
I didn’t expect much from my original posting as very few people had GPS units back then and I didn’t expect any GPS people would live near me that use Usenet. It was just a shot in the dark and I didn’t know what to expect.

After a day or so I was very surprised that someone from out of state came to Oregon just to try and find my first cache. And they did ! Then more came… Soon people were putting out their own caches and I took trips to go find them and it was all great fun.

Non mi sarei arreso solo perché non avevo ricevuto una risposta immediata a una proposta iniziale. Per prima cosa suppongo che sia stato qualcosa di sbagliato nella prima proposta e quindi avrei dovuto cambiare il gioco in un formato più favorevole.
I would not have given up just because I didn’t get an immediate response to an initial proposal. I would first assume that it was something I did wrong in the first proposal and therefore I would need to change the game to a more favorable format.

Dalla mia ricerca sui sistemi intelligenti, capii che il GPS Stash Hunt era un nuovo sistema intelligente in evoluzione e che avrei dovuto usare le mie abilità per guidare il suo sviluppo in una direzione ben definita. Lavorai duramente per circa un mese per sviluppare delle linee guida complete e fruibili. La prima linea guida era il nome, GPS Stash Hunt suonava male.
Dalla scienza dei sistemi intelligenti avevo imparato quanto il nome di lancio fosse un elemento chiave nel successo di ogni impresa.
Volevo un nome che finisse in –ing, per farne qualcosa di più che semplice conoscenza, qualcosa che portasse alla comprensione da parte dei giocatori.
I sistemi intelligenti sono insiemi di conoscenza e comprensione che lavorano in accordo.
Mi venne in mente GPS Stashing, ma non mi piaceva nemmeno quello.
Qualcuno consigliò Geostashing… cominciava a suonare meglio.
Alla fine qualcuno tirò fuori caching, così fu inventato il termine Geocaching.
Ci misi solamente un giorno per realizzare che Geocaching era davvero un bel nome.
Nemmeno Jeremy ci mise molto a rendersene conto e fece di Geocaching il nome del suo sito web.
Grazie a lui oggi noi tutti abbiamo un sito di prima classe per supportare il Geocaching.
From my research into Intelligent Systems, I realized that GPS Stash Hunt was a new and evolving intelligent system and I should use my skills to guide its development in a well designed direction. I worked hard for a month or so to establish a complete and workable knowledge base. First in knowledge is the Name and I had bad feelings about GPS Stash Hunt. From the science of intelligent systems the ‘Name Director’ is a key element in the success of any endeavor. I also wanted the Name to end in (ing) to make it more than just knowledge, that would make it an Understanding. Intelligent Systems are systems of both Knowledge and Understanding working together. The name GPS Stashing came to mind but I didn’t like that. Someone recommended Geostashing and that sounded better. Finally someone brought up ‘caching’ and the Geocaching word was invented. It only took me a day to realize that Geocaching was a Really Good Name. It didn’t take Jeremy long to realize it too and make it the name of his website. Thanks to Jeremy we now have a first class website to support Geocaching!
Par mes recherches sur les systèmes intelligents, j’ai réalisé que le GPS Stash Hunt était un nouveau système intelligent évolutif, et je devais utiliser mes compétences pour guider son développement dans une direction bien définie. J’ai travaillé dur pendant un mois ou deux pour établir une base de connaissances complète et pratique. Il n’a pas fallu longtemps à Jeremy pour réaliser aussi, et en faire le nom de son site Web. Grâce à Jeremy, nous avons maintenant un site de première classe pour soutenir le Geocaching !

Geocaching became a new human understanding, like reading, writing, walking, and talking. A new understanding to a human is like a new App for a smart phone. New understanding gives humans ‘additional capability’ to do new things. Geocaching was a New Thing to do to have fun. No wonder its so popular. I thought it would easily grow to thousands of geocaches but millions, I never thought that far.
Géocacher est devenu une nouvelle fonction humaine, comme lire, écrire, marcher et parler. Une nouvelle fonction pour un être humain est comme une nouvelle application pour un smartphone. After www.geocaching.com was developed I lost any control I had to influence the knowledge base design. Most normal people rarely listen to anything I have to say but this was a good thing. I went back to developing my really big intelligent system that I call ISSU. ISSU pronounced ‘issue’ is an acronym for Intelligent System Specification Unit. It’s a social network for developing new intelligent systems and advanced understandings. I never had any interest in working for Groundspeak or Geocaching.com. Although both of those organizations are intelligent systems the people that work there don’t know that. They may even think they own the name ‘geocaching’ but they don’t. The geocachers own the name geocaching when its installed in their brains as an understanding. Nothing Groundspeak can ever do will stop that. Like laughing and playing, geocaching is another human App that will live on for generations to come.

Il mio cache originale, situato lungo il ciglio della strada, è stato danneggiato da una falciatrice. Il tappo è saltato e così si è riempito di acqua diventando inutilizzabile.
Dissotterrato il contenitore, ho gettato il contenuto (che includeva la lattina di fagioli) nel buco in cui era sotterrato il secchiello. Non era un buon posto per una cache che quindi doveva essere rimossa.
My ‘original cache’ got hit by a roadside mowing machine and the top knocked off. It filled with rainwater and left a mess. I pulled up the bucket and dumped the remaining contents (which included the rusty can of beans) back into the hole. It was not a good location for a cache and had to be discontinued.

Trovo molto più interessante scoprire nuovi luoghi da solo, senza l’aiuto di altre persone su geocaching.com.
Il mio camper si è evoluto in una meraviglia tecnologica alimentato a pannelli solari, batterie al litio, condizionamento elettrico, luci a LED, cucina ad induzione ed internet satellitare.
Continuo a migliorare il design e la funzionalità del mio camper per farne il perfetto stile della vita in mobilità.
Vivo ogni giorno ai limiti dell’innovazione tecnologica e tutto ciò è davvero molto divertente.

I quit Geocaching because I found more and better fun things to do. I used my knowledge of Intelligent System Science to edit and remake my entire life. I sold my house and moved into a motorhome some 14 years ago and have been traveling around, following good warm weather, and moving my location almost weekly ever since. The western United States is a huge place to explore and I use GPS and mapping technologies almost daily to explore new areas. I find it more fun to discover new special places on my own instead of using the help of other people on geocaching.com. My motorhome has evolved into a technological marvel of solar power, lithium batteries, electric refrigeration, LED lighting, induction cooking, and satellite Internet. I keep improving the motorhome design and operation to make the perfect mobile lifestyle. I live on the cutting edge of technological evolution and its all great fun every day. Today I’m in the middle of no where Nevada happily typing this message to you. Tomorrow I will move to a nearby hot spring so I can sit in warm water at night and watch the arriving meteor shower. Then move to a friends ranch where I will store my motorhome while I’m off for a fun trip to France! My life is just so much fun that I really have little time left over for geocaching.

Sono molto interessato nell’apprendere come il sistema intelligente Geocaching si sia evoluto. Sono lontano dal Geocaching ormai da parecchi anni.
Andrò in Francia per cercare di imparare una nuova prospettiva su come le nuove conoscenze possono entrare nel sistema. Groundspeak mantiene un controllo davvero serrato delle linee guida lasciando passare solo pochissime nuove idee.
Mi chiedo se con qualche pressione sarebbe possibile cambiare questo trend ?
I am very interested in learning how the intelligent system of Geocaching has evolved. I have been away from it for many years now. I’m going to France looking to learn a new perspective on how new knowledge can get into the system. Groundspeak keeps very tight control of the knowledge base and let very few new ideas in. I wonder if there is any pressure to change this?

Mi ricorda di quando, qualche anno fa, ho avuto da dire con geocaching.com riguardo l’aggiunta delle Virtual Caches. A quel tempo, erano proibite.
Le Virtual Caches sono tutt’ora una valida idea per fare Geocaching e spero che alcune delle funzionalità di Pokemon Go possano essere migliorate ed aggiunte al Geocaching.
Mi spaventa quanto sarebbe semplice per un terrorista piazzare dei congegni esplosivi all’interno di
alcune cache ponendo così fine al gioco.
I did notice that Pokemon Go is a new GPS game. More power to them! It reminds me of years ago when I argued with geocaching.com about the addition of virtual caches. At that time they were banned. Virtual caches are still a good idea for geocaching and I hope some of the Pokemon Go features can be enhanced and added to geocaching. It worries me a bit at how easy it would be for a terrorist to booby
trap a few caches and end the whole game.
Oui, j’ai remarqué que Pokemon Go est un nouveau jeu géolocalisé. Tant mieux pour eux ! Cela me rappelle il y a quelques années quand je discutais avec geocaching.com à propos de l’ajout de caches virtuelles. A cette époque, elles ont été interdites. Les caches virtuelles sont toujours une bonne idée pour le geocaching et j’espère que quelques-unes des caractéristiques de Pokemon Go pourront être améliorées et ajoutées au géocaching. Cela me préoccupe un peu qu’il soit facile pour un terroriste de piéger quelques caches et mette fin à l’ensemble du jeu.
